Starting Counselling: What to Expect

Getting started

I'm often asked by potential clients when is the right time to start counselling.

How do I know if now is the right time?

There is no right or wrong answer. I would say the right time is usually when life begins to feel harder to manage alone or something just feels off for you. This is because counselling is not just about solving problems, it is also about understanding yourself, building resilience, and improving your emotional wellbeing.

What would we talk about?

You may be thinking about starting counselling because of a major life event such as relationship difficulties, work changes such as promotion or retirement. Or perhaps you are considering starting counselling because of certain feelings like anxiety or stress or loneliness.

It’s also ok to start counselling when you notice smaller signs first: feeling overwhelmed, constantly worried, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected from people around you. These feelings can grow over time, and counselling can provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore them.

How do I take the first step?

I know it can sometimes feel difficult to take the first step into counselling and I’ve tried to keep the initial contact as simple as possible for you. I understand how it feels to be unsure about what to expect or to wonder if your feelings are “serious enough” for counselling. You don’t need to reach a breaking point before you start counselling. Lots of my clients choose counselling because they want to find clarity or work on personal growth.

Working with me

I will offer you a calm, confidential environment where you can talk honestly and safely about your feelings. Talking in this way creates a lightness. Often, the act of speaking your feelings and being heard can create meaningful change.

Are you ready?

The best time to start counselling is when you feel ready to focus on yourself and to invest in your own wellbeing. For many clients, starting counselling can be the start of a new chapter of healing, growth, and positive change.
